The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States, a long, shallow arm of the Atlantic that reaches through Maryland and Virginia. Fresh water from its rivers mixes with salt water from the ocean, which is why the bay is so full of life. For people who sail, fish, and work on the water, it is home.
Boating Culture on the Chesapeake
Boating on the Chesapeake Bay goes back generations. Watermen still work the bay for crabs and oysters, and the traditional skipjack is Maryland’s state boat. Sailors fill the harbors every weekend, and Annapolis is known as one of the great sailing towns in the country. Cruisers, racers, fishermen, and owners of classic wooden boats all share the same water. Our shop in Edgewater, Maryland, sits close to the bay, and much of our boating work is for people who live and play on it.
Boat Names Made for the Bay
A boat name is the first thing people read on a vessel, and on the Chesapeake it is part of the culture. Owners choose names that are funny, sentimental, or tied to family and place. We turn those names into lettering that suits the boat, whether that means gold leaf, silver leaf, or vinyl. Many owners also order matching quarterboards and life rings, so the whole boat carries the same look.

Lettering That Holds Up on the Water
Sun, spray, and salt air are hard on any boat, so a name has to be made to last. Every boat is its own project, and a craftsman plans each name around the vessel it will ride on. For more on the bay itself, see this overview of the Chesapeake Bay.
