Gold Leaf Lettering on Glass

Beautiful gold leaf signs on glass, also called glass gilding. We do it all by hand, using only the best materials available. Designs & Signs is well known in the Washington, DC area for glass gilding. We have installed so many fantastic looking glass gilding projects for residents and businesses all over the city.

Glass Gilding

Glass gilding is the process of indenting lettering into the windows to develop lettering and assure that it’s smooth and evenly matched. This is generally the most efficient means of applying smooth lettering to a window as opposed to simply painting on the window blindly. First, we take a stencil to carefully indent the lettering outline into the interior of the glass. Second, we hand paint the 23 karat gold leaf painting by hand into the established outline. Then, we back up the gold painting with black paint to protect the gold leaf paint and add a stark contrast between the glass and the gold leaf paint. Afterwords, we use a brush to clean any excess gold and smoothen out the lettering.

Gold Leaf Window Lettering

Typically we letter windows for restaurants, bars, and high end specialty shops. We also do some surface gilding at local museums and carved monuments. Currently we are part of a renaissance of gold leaf signage which is happening right now in Washington, DC. Traditional gold leaf is in high demand and we are excited to be a part of it!

Residential homes also need gold leaf, traditional gold numbers on the glass transom above the front entrance. We gild transoms on private homes, businesses, and multi-residence building all over the city. Sometimes we find ourselves gilding in Baltimore and Annapolis as well for residential gold leaf projects.
