Gold leaf film is genuine 22 karat gold leaf on a thin, flexible backing. As a result, we can cut it and apply it much like our Avery vinyl. In addition, a silver version works the same way, with a cool silver finish. Both give the look of real gold leaf where hand gilding isn’t the right fit.
Two different crafts
Film and traditional gilding are two different crafts. We still gild by hand on wooden boats, carved quarterboards and glass, just as our shop has done since 1976. Film, however, is a different material, and we apply it rather than gild it. For that reason, we use it on fiberglass hulls, life rings, busy entrance doors and tinted windows. Either way, the gold is real, and it holds up for years outdoors.
Gold leaf film finishes
Each roll has its own look. For example, burnished has a soft, satin shine, while brushed has a fine grain. Florentine swirl and engine turn, on the other hand, catch the light from every angle, and engine turn comes in small, large and extra-large patterns. We save mirror for glass, such as shop windows and transoms where traditional gilding isn’t possible. Finally, reverse rolls go on the inside of the glass.
Silver leaf film finishes
The silver rolls come in the same finishes. Because of their cooler tone, they suit white hulls, stainless rails and modern yachts. In fact, we often letter the Fleming yachts at Burr Yacht Sales in burnished silver.
