Hummingbird is another Fleming yacht with a boat name in burnished silver leaf. We lettered her name in a large, flowing script, and we set her hailing port, Pensacola, Florida, in capitals below. Like our silver leaf boat name for Pearl, this name pairs silver leaf with a black Avery vinyl outline.
Installing a large script boat name
The photo below shows the first step of the installation. First, we position the black Avery vinyl layer on the transom and tape it into place. At this stage, the application mask still covers the lettering. Once the vinyl sits exactly where it belongs, the burnished silver leaf work can begin.
A large script font like this one makes the installation tricky. In a script, all of the letters join together, so the name goes on as one big piece instead of small individual letters. As a result, we use a lot of application fluid on a job like this, which lets us slide the whole name into exactly the right spot before it sticks. Patience at this step is what makes the finished name look effortless.
Burnished silver leaf with a black outline
The black outline gives the silver script a crisp edge, so the name stays readable even where the strokes run thin. Meanwhile, the hailing port below uses simple capitals, which balance the busy script above. Hummingbird’s lettering is silver leaf film, a material that handles much like vinyl. It is very different from the loose leaf we use for traditional gilding on glass and wooden boards.
