We made this rustic sandblasted sign for Londontowne Marina at our shop in Edgewater, Maryland. So what is an HDU sign? HDU is high-density urethane, a dense, stable material that holds fine detail. For this sign, we blasted the layered design and then painted all of the details by hand. Sandblasting is one of many methods we use to make dimensional signs from HDU. It suits almost any dimensional sign.
Shaping HDU Signs
With machines or by hand, we can shape and carve HDU with ease. Color choices matter on a rustic sandblasted sign, because everything must work together to give residents and guests a cohesive look. For this sign, we kept the gold leaf to a minimum and chose darker, earthier tones. Some cross-hatching and minor details give prominence to the heron in the foreground.
