A dimensional sign has letters and artwork that stand out from the surface, rather than sitting flat on it. That depth catches light and casts shadow, so the sign reads clearly from a distance and looks more substantial up close. At our shop in Edgewater, Maryland, we design and build every style, from carved entrance signs to raised office letters. For background, see this overview of signage.

Carved and Sandblasted Dimensional Signs

Many of our dimensional signs start as a solid panel of HDU (high-density urethane) or cedar. We can sandblast the material, which leaves flat, raised letters above a textured background. Alternatively, we can route it with V-cut incised letters. Then we often finish the lettering in genuine 23 karat gold leaf. For example, we made a gold leaf dimensional sign for Blanca Flor in the historic district of Annapolis. We also made one for the Inn at Horn Point, a bed and breakfast nearby.

Dimensional Letters for Offices

Indoors, a dimensional sign usually means individual letters mounted on a wall. We make them in painted PVC, acrylic, brushed metal, and stainless steel. For instance, we installed raised PVC letters for Kullman Siebert and laser-cut acrylic letters for Metropolitan Pediatric. We even made a 74-inch painted acrylic letter for the Weitzman Agency. Likewise, brushed gold letters give an office wall a polished look, as at Chesley.

Cast Metal Dimensional Signs

For plaques and building markers, we also make cast metal signs in aluminum and bronze, with a range of finishes. The raised letters form in the casting itself, so they last for decades outdoors. Learn more on our cast bronze and aluminum page.
