Routed Signs Look Like They Were Carved by Hand
Below, you’ll see a close-up of an incised letter routed into high-density urethane (HDU) and gilded in gold leaf. It’s a great example of gold leafing carved letters. When they’re routed this way, HDU signs have the classic look of traditional hand carving. There is a small difference, though. Letters carved by hand have slight imperfections, and those tiny variations catch the light and reflect it more brilliantly. Still, in many cases the cost of carving a sign by hand outweighs the benefit. That’s why CNC routing fills the gap with a quality, affordable solution.

In our Edgewater, MD shop, Designs & Signs makes gold leaf signs for all kinds of uses. For example, we make community entrance signs, restaurant and shop signs, and gilded lettering on glass windows. A CNC router is an excellent tool for sign making, because it carves incised letters into an HDU sign face quickly and cleanly. We finished these letters in 23 karat gold leaf. In addition, we can restore old gold leaf signs and gilded antiques.
