Carved boat name boards. Veritas with gold leaf!

Luxurious Carved boat name boards

Carved boat name boards are beautiful; clearly, they are the best product available for your luxury yacht. At Designs & Signs, we use only the best materials available, making your maritime signage by hand, the old-fashioned way. Teak is hard to come by these days, but we have a great local supplier who sorts us out every time. Howard selects each board for the attractive appearance of its grain. Straight grain with no knots is easier to carve, and it is more appealing.

How do we make carved boat name boards?

Travis Brandon designs all of our hand-made boat boards. In addition, he produces carving patterns for Howard Rogers. Howard is a master carver with 50 years of sign trade experience. Unfortunately, machine routers cannot reproduce the quality of a naturally tooled letter.

Finally, Brendon Brandon sands the boards and then washes them with a teak wash to remove the surface oils. The master gilder then applies the 23 karat patent gold leaf by hand. Next, Brendon applies the outline carefully with a lettering brush. Before gilding and outlining, each board requires at least six coats of varnish with sanding between coats.

After outlining, Travis applies six more coats of oil-based spar urethane to achieve a beautiful glassy finished look. Throughout their years of service, your boards will require occasional maintenance. When the clear coat begins to fade, a light sanding is needed, and then you can apply another coat of oil-base spar urethane or oil-based spar varnish. If you need help, please send us the boards, and we’ll take care of this before you between seasons.

Veritas the goddess of truth

Veritas, meaning truth, is the Roman goddess of truth and the daughter of Saturn, and she is the mother of Virtus. She is the daughter of Jupiter (called Zeus by the Greeks).  Ancient mythology depicst Veritas dressed in white, and as the “naked truth” (Nuda Veritas) holding a hand mirror. A perfect reflection of oneself is the truth. The depiction is interesting to say the least.
Her nature was elusive, according to mythological accounts. According to legend, she took to hiding at the bottom of a holy well, where she could not be located without considerable effort and expense for individuals who desired to discover her whereabouts and identity. The evasive nature of truth is defined by these stories.
In Latin, Veritas is the virtue of honesty. Truth is the most important character trait of any Roman citizen. In Greek mythology, the goddess of truth is Aletheia (Ancient Greek: Ἀλήθεια).

As a motto, Veritas becomes popular in western cultures.

Many colleges, universities, and other institutions use the word “Veritas” is their mottos. Scholars pursue the truth in every field of study. By it’s nature truth is elusive. Truth is absolute. Truth is perfect.

Jesus is the truth! from John 14

5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
