The glass above this entry door is large compared to others in the area. That height left room for the street name below the house numbers. The color of the door and trim also helps the gold stand out.
Gilding the Glass
Gilding glass is straightforward in concept, but it is unforgiving. First, we clean the transom completely, because any oil, dust, or dirt left on the glass stays visible. Next, we lay the gold leaf with great care. Even a gust of wind can tear or crumple it. After we fix any holidays (small gaps), we let the gold dry.
Then we apply a protective coat of paint over the back of the gold. This step seals the leaf against the glass, so it does not wipe away when the inside of the glass is cleaned. The painted outline also adds contrast between the gold and the glass, which makes the address easier to read. Finally, we remove the excess gold around the numbers and letters.
Once the gold dried completely, it became nearly as reflective as the glass itself. The finished address also suits the red entry door and black trim.
