This burnished gold leaf boat name belongs to Bonnie Sue, a yacht we lettered at Burr Yacht Sales in Edgewater, Maryland. We lettered her name in a flowing script over a crisp black Avery outline. Below the name, her hailing port, Stuart, FL, sits in classic capitals. In addition, the script matches the pair of carved teak quarterboards we made for her.
A burnished gold leaf boat name in script
A script font gives a boat name movement and a classic, hand-lettered look. On Bonnie Sue, the capital B and S sweep wide, just like on her quarterboards. As a result, the transom and the boards read as one matching set. Burnished gold also has a soft, warm shine, so it looks rich without glaring in the sun.
Why a black outline
Even a burnished gold boat name can wash out from a distance on a white hull. For that reason, a thin black outline frames each letter. That way, the name stays sharp from the dock and across the water. We use the same outline on the hailing port, so the whole layout ties together.
Lettering a burnished gold leaf boat name
We apply gold leaf film much like vinyl, so the name stays crisp and holds up well on a fiberglass hull. First, we lay out the name to scale and send you a mock photo on your own transom. Then we line up each layer and apply it by hand. Watch us letter the hailing port in the video below.
