Historic Transom Numbers in Washington, DC
We have a long history of traditional gold leaf signs and glass gilding at Designs & Signs. We have lettered many residential transoms in Washington, DC, and we work from Edgewater, Maryland. For example, the photos below show new gold leaf numbers on a historic transom in Adams Morgan. These historic transom numbers use a classic font that the B&O Railroad Company also used. It was an exciting choice for a historic home, and it is quite a conversation piece for the owner.

Gold Leaf Glass Gilding for a Home
We gilded these numbers on glass with double gold leaf, applied by hand. Then we added a black outline and backup paint to protect the gold. As a result, the numbers stand out clearly against the glass. Gold leaf is a fitting choice for a historic home, because it suits the age and character of the building.
Historic Transom Numbers: The Details
The final steps call for patience. First, we apply backup paint to each number carefully. Next, we remove the excess gold from the glass while the paint is still setting. Because the work is delicate at this stage, we take our time. For more on this type of work, see our glass gilding projects.
Plan Your Gold Leaf Numbers
First, send us your address numbers and a photo of your transom. Next, we prepare a drawing with a font and layout for your approval. Then we gild the numbers by hand. Please get in touch if you would like a quote for your own home.
