We made these gold leaf quarterboards for Bonnie Sue. We carved her name into a matching pair of teak boards in a flowing script. Then we gilded each letter by hand in 23 karat gold leaf and finished it with a crisp black outline. Like every pair we make, we built them to order at our shop in Edgewater, Maryland.
A script that suits gold leaf quarterboards
A script font gives a boat name a graceful, classic look. In addition, the long loops and swashes catch the light as the boat moves. On Bonnie Sue, the capital B and S sweep well past the rest of the name. As a result, the boards feel lively without losing their traditional style.
Why gold leaf and a black outline
On gold leaf quarterboards, real gold has a warm glow that paint can’t match. However, gold on a bright teak board can blend into the grain from a distance. For that reason, a thin black outline frames every letter. That way, the name reads clearly from the dock, while the gold still shines up close. To learn more about the process, read our gilding guide.
Built to last on the water
We seal each board with marine varnish and then spray on several coats of Awlcraft 3000 Clear. This tough finish protects gold leaf quarterboards from sun and salt spray for years. Watch the video below for a closer look at the finished pair.
