Katalyst is a palladium leaf quarterboard we made in our Edgewater shop. Today it hangs on display at the Burgee Bar in Key Largo, Florida. The board is mahogany with notched corners, and its bold, flowing script matches the energy of the name.
Script Lettering with an Outline and Shadow
First, we laid out the script lettering by hand. Then we gilded each letter in palladium leaf. Next, we added a black outline and a drop shadow around the letters. As a result, the name pops off the warm red grain of the mahogany. In addition, palladium has a bright silver color that won’t tarnish. That means this palladium leaf quarterboard stays crisp for years.
Finally, we sealed the board with TotalBoat Lust marine varnish. After that, we sprayed several coats of Awlcraft 3000 Clear on top. Together, they protect the wood and the leaf from sun, humidity and salt air. That matters in the Florida Keys, where signs face strong sun all year.
A Palladium Leaf Quarterboard Made to Order
Quarterboards started out on sailing ships, where they carried the vessel’s name. Today, they hang on boats, docks, homes and bars alike. For example, Katalyst now greets guests at the Burgee Bar, along with our reKUPPERation marlin sign. Palladium leaf works well when you want something brighter and more contemporary than gold.
We draw, gild and finish every board to order. For instance, we can match the lettering on your transom or your logo. We can also work in gold or palladium leaf. In addition, we can change the outline and shadow colors and size the board to fit your space. Because the finished board travels well, we ship anywhere.
