Mahogany is a tropical hardwood known for its rich, reddish-brown color and straight, even grain. Boatbuilders and furniture makers have prized it for generations. For sign making, it carves cleanly and takes a finish beautifully. At our shop in Edgewater, Maryland, it’s one of the two woods we use for hand-carved quarterboards, alongside teak.
Mahogany or Teak?
Both are fine hardwoods, and both carve well. The main difference for most customers is cost: mahogany boards come in at a lower price point than teak. Mahogany also has a deeper, redder tone, while teak is more golden. Either way, we pick each plank by hand for its grain and how well it will carve. As a result, not every board makes the cut, and we reject any with flaws. For a full comparison, see our guide to wood for hand-carved signs.
Hand-Carved Mahogany Quarterboards
First, we send you fonts that suit carving and fit a long, narrow board. Then we carve the name by hand and finish the letters in genuine 23 karat gold leaf. Double gold leaf is our standard, although palladium leaf is also available. A painted outline adds contrast, so the name reads clearly from the dock. For example, the Ravello boards sit on a Fleming yacht outfitted by Burr Yacht Sales in Edgewater. Likewise, the boards for Mystic Lady use a script font chosen to fit the board.
Caring for Mahogany
We protect the wood and the gold leaf with TotalBoat Lust marine varnish. Like any varnished wood on a boat, mahogany boards need a little care over time. From time to time, give them a light sanding and a fresh coat of varnish, and they’ll keep looking sharp for years.
Mahogany Signs for Homes
Mahogany also makes a handsome house sign. For instance, we carved a welcome sign for a family in Severna Park and finished it in palladium leaf. In fact, we finish all of our traditional carved signs in gold or palladium leaf.
