Outlining a carved teak nameboard by hand
In this photo, Brendon Brandon outlines the gold leaf letters on a carved teak nameboard. He uses a lettering brush and a steady hand. This is one of the last steps before we protect the board, and it brings the whole name to life.

Why the outline matters
First, the outline makes the gold leaf pop. It adds contrast between the gold and the teak, so the name is easy to read from far away. In addition, the outline gives each letter depth. As a result, the board looks sharp from the dock and from the water.
A steady hand makes the difference. Each stroke has to follow the carved edge exactly, so the gold stays crisp and the lines stay clean. That care separates a hand-finished board from a printed sign.
From carved letters to a finished board
First, we carve the letters into the teak by hand. Next, we gild them with gold leaf. Then Brendon outlines each letter with a brush. This step takes patience, because he works one letter at a time. Finally, we protect the finished board with multiple coats of Awlcraft Clear 3000. The finish lasts ten years before it needs sanding and recoating.
Order a carved teak nameboard
Every carved teak nameboard is different. We start with your boat’s name and a drawing, and we adjust it with you until it feels right. Then we carve, gild, and outline the board by hand. Many owners also order a matching personalized life ring, so the name looks the same everywhere on the boat.
