HDU stands for high-density urethane. It’s a rigid, dense synthetic material that sign makers use as an alternative to wood. Sign shops can cut, carve, and shape it into letters, logos, and full sign panels.

What HDU Is Used For

Sign makers choose HDU when they want a sign with shape and depth. It works well for raised letters, carved details, and custom outlines. So it suits signs that need to stand out from the wall or the post behind them. Raised letters and bold shapes can also improve visibility, especially for signs people read from a distance.

How We Use HDU

We use HDU to make several kinds of signs. Dimensional signs have raised letters and shapes. Routed signs are shaped with a router. Carved signs add hand-shaped detail on top of that. We also use it for community entrance signs. Every piece still takes a craftsman’s touch, from the first cut to the final finish.

Choosing the Right Material

HDU isn’t the answer for every sign. We also work in wood, and each material has its own look. So we choose based on the project, the setting, and what you want the sign to say. Then we talk it through with you before we build. That way, you get a sign that fits its place.

See It in Our Work

You can see this material at work across our portfolio. Browse our routed HDU signs, carved signs, dimensional letters, and community entrance signs. Every one is its own project, from the first sketch to the final install. We also build the design and the palette with you along the way.

Our What We Do page shows everything we build. Wondering if HDU suits your sign? The quickest way to get started is to send us an email. Prefer to talk? You can also call (410) 798-5115.
