Gold Leaf Boat Names for Audrey

We make beautiful hand-made gold leaf boat names at Designs & Signs, installing gold leaf yacht lettering with traditional materials and techniques. On this job, the pounce pattern was not in the right place yet. So we adjusted the pattern first, using a level and a tape measure. Then we tapped the pattern with a charcoal bag, and the charcoal transferred the outline of the letters onto the boat’s transom. Thousands of tiny holes in the pattern let the charcoal powder pass through.

Installing traditional gold leaf boat names is not easy. It requires a lot of preparation and time. We do our best to get every job done right on the first try. The gilding process is all-consuming, and we cannot rush it, or we will undoubtedly regret our haste.

Finally, when we render the shadow, this beautiful name begins to take shape. This boat name is by far our favorite name of all. We would love to letter many more boats like this! Traditional wooden yachts call for the most elegant lettering, and we can do that for your boat too.

23 Karat Gold Leaf Yacht Lettering, Rendered by Hand

This is gold leaf boat lettering for Audrey. The owner designed the name, and Brendon Brandon of Designs & Signs hand-rendered it on site. The classic yacht sets sail from historic St. Mary’s City in Southern Maryland. We also painted the outline, the shadow and the hailing port with a fine lettering brush and Sherwin-Williams paint.

After the name dries completely, we apply additional coats of TotalBoat Lust marine varnish to the transom to protect it. Lightly sand the varnish if it starts to look dull, and add an extra coat every year. As long as the varnish is well maintained, a gold leaf name will last for many years.
