Hand Lettering and Stenciling for Something Vintage Rentals

Hand Lettering and Stenciling for Something Vintage Rentals

We painted hand lettering on a wall and stenciled a detailed logo on a door for Something Vintage Rentals, near Washington, DC. Designs & Signs works from Edgewater, Maryland, and we like to do hand lettering right. This project also gave us a chance to show two traditional techniques side by side.

Hand lettering and stenciling on a wall for Something Vintage Rentals

Hand Lettering on a Rough Wall

First, we use a pounce pattern to transfer the outlines of the letters onto the wall. A pounce pattern is basically a drawing of the lettering with small holes in it. Fine charcoal dust passes through the holes and leaves a faint outline on the wall. Next, we paint the letters by hand. The trick is painting accurately on an uneven, rough surface, and this wall was a tough one. However, with experience, patience, and the right brush, we got a clean result.

Stenciling Small Details on the Door

The logo on the door has small details, so it would be difficult to paint by hand. In this situation, we prefer to use a stencil. Hand lettering and stenciling both take experience and patience, but stenciling is hard to do correctly. We also use different stencil materials for different surfaces. For example, stronger high-tack stencils work well on rough surfaces such as brick and wood. In contrast, lightweight low-tack stencils suit smooth painted surfaces and glass. The right brush and the right paint matter as well.
