Mahogany Quarterboard: Chelsea, Carved and Gilded in Gold Leaf

We made Chelsea, a traditional mahogany quarterboard, in our Edgewater shop and shipped it to the Burgee Bar. The board is 47 inches long and 13 inches tall. Notched corners and tall, narrow letters give the name a classic nautical look.

We carved the letters into the mahogany and gilded them in 23 karat gold leaf. A black outline makes the name stand out against the wood grain. We sealed the board with TotalBoat Lust marine varnish. Sprayed coats of Awlcraft 3000 Clear protect it from the weather for years to come.

In the video, I walk around the finished board. I talk through the materials and techniques that go into a quarterboard like this one.

Quarterboards started out on sailing ships, carrying the vessel’s name. Today we make them for boats, cottages, bars and homes. See more of our carved quarterboards and boat names.
