World War II Memorial

Kevin Nick installs carved stone lettering at The World War II Memorial on The Mall in Washington, DC.  Kevin is a master carver with Designs & Signs.  He has thirty years of professional stone carving experience. Designs & Signs has carved and/or gilded various monuments and memorials in Washington, DC and it’s surrounding areas. This photo illustrates very well, the sand carving process, which is similar for many types of stone, as well as a variety of other substrates. In short, a pre-cut rubber mask is installed on the carving surface with low tac glue, then the cut letters are removed. Sand is then propelled toward the surface with compressed air. The rubber protects the covered stone surface while the exposed areas are carved out. Only experienced carvers can utilize this method accurately, maintaining a consistent carving depth with each letter.
